The Arizona Cardinals will host the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City on October 2, 2005. This will mark the NFL's first regular-season game outside the United States. ESPN will televise the Sunday night game from Azteca Stadium.

The Cards almost never sell out Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ while capacity at Azteca Stadium is more than 100,000.

"Mexico is the country with the most NFL fans outside of the United States," said commissioner Paul Tagliabue. "Our fans in Mexico are knowledgeable and passionate and they are ready for this next step. They have supported our American Bowl games in record numbers and NFL programming has been part of television in Mexico for many decades."

112,376 fans saw a preseason contest between the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Oilers in Mexico City in 1994, easily the largest crowd in NFL history.
