Earlier this week, the Arizona Cardinals signed second-round pick Taitusi Lutui to a four-year contract. The former USC Trojans offensive guard has the skills to develop into one of the league's elite offensive linemen.

The 6-4, 334-pounder's best trait is his versatility. As a junior for the Trojans in their National Championship season of 2004, "Deuce" Lutui started all of the team's games at right tackle. Last season he shifted over to left guard, dominating opposing defensive linemen on a weekly basis and helping Heisman Trophy-winning runner Reggie Bush pile up yardage with terrific run blocking.

Other than an ability to play multiple positions, Lutui's greatest upside rests in his strength. He became one of the most dominant run blockers in the nation, especially last season.

Although Bush seems to get all the credit for the great numbers he put up in college, plenty of praise must be given to his offensive line, especially Lutui and former right tackle Winston Justice, who was also a second-round pick. In the end, Lutui--not the more well-known Justice--was awarded with USC's Offensive Lineman of the Year honor.

Now that Lutui is in the pros, the 23-year-old's No. 1 goal should focus on continuing to working hard. Too often, young offensive linemen fall under the trap of growing complacent with their contract status and for lack of a better phrase, eating themselves out of the NFL.

Most recently, former 2002 No. 4 overall pick Mike Williams is on the verge of having his time as a pro reach its expiration date, having already been released by the Buffalo Bills. Williams, nearing 400 pounds, is expected to be cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars soon, which would likely end his playing career.

Unfortunately for Lutui, his biggest problem has been staying in shape. If the highly talented road-grader can keep his weight in check, he'll be a special player in Arizona for a long time.

With his former Trojans teammate, quarterback Matt Leinart, likely to be under center starting for the Arizona Cardinals by 2007, the team's future offense will rest greatly on two former USC stars. Judging by the tandem's past success, that's great news for the fans in the desert.
