Two days after San Diego Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith declared contract negotiations with All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates dead in the water, the two sides have agreed on a six-year extension reportedly worth around $4 million a season.

The two sides worked over the off-season for a contract agreement, but when training camp arrived Gates held out and refused to sign a one-year tender worth $380,000. The San Diego Chargers then sent Gates' agent Andre Colona a letter saying that if his client didn't report to camp by Saturday afternoon, the team would be forced to place him on the Roster Exempt List, thereby suspending him for three games including the regular season opener.

Gates showed up a day late, on Sunday evening. He stated on Monday that he couldn't find a flight from Detroit to San Diego. As of now, Antonio Gates remains on the suspended list.
