Anthony Waters will have to be forgiven if he takes the exhibition season a little more seriously than many other players on NFL training camp rosters. The San Diego Chargers linebacker appeared in two exhibitions in 2007; that was the only game action he has seen since 2006, when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament at Clemson.

Waters led the Tigers in tackles as a junior and had the potential to be a higher draft pick before suffering the knee injury that ended his senior season just as it was getting started. He was still rehabilitating when the Chargers decided to select Waters in the third round, knowing it was unlikely he'd be available immediately.

The Chargers got a chance to look at Waters throughout the '07 campaign, but they never saw him in regular-season action. Waters practiced with the team during the season, continuing to work his way back from the injury, but concerns over his knee ailment kept them from being ready to set him loose in game situations.

Waters will spend the 2008 preseason trying to prove to the Chargers that he is ready for a spot on the active roster. The 6-foot-3, 238-pounder could figure into plans at inside linebacker in San Diego’s 3-4 defense.

A full recovery from knee trouble would allow Waters to show the athletic ability that helped him score 27 touchdowns while earning all-state honors as a senior at Lake View High School in South Carolina while leading his team in rushing, receiving and tackles.

Chargers inside linebackers coach Ron Rivera told the San Diego Union Tribune that Waters ran well during an impressive minicamp performance. His combination of size and speed gives the Chargers reason to believe that using a third-rounder on Waters was a wise investment.
