The San Diego Chargers announced that safety Clinton Hart, a restricted free agent, has signed a 3-year contract with the team.

Hart first came to the Chargers at the beginning of the 2004 season after he was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles. As a rookie in Philadelphia, Hart saw action in all 16 games of the regular season -- nine of them as a starter. He recorded 46 tackles and one sack for the Eagles that year.

In his first season with the Chargers, Hart saw limited playing time. He appeared in 12 games, notching 9 tackles and one interception. After a lot of hard work in the offseason, Hart really started to come on in the 2005 campaign. He played in 14 games, and finished the season listed as the starter on the depth chart in front of Hanik Milligan and Terrence Kiel. Hart racked up 34 tackles, one forced fumble, and one interception, and was a frequent contributor on special teams.

San Diego is not known for its ability to defend against the pass. In fact, the team gave up 224.9 passing yards per game last season, which put them way down at 28th in the league in that category. Nevertheless, hanging on to Hart is definitely a step in the right direction. His scouting report indicates that speed and quickness are his best assets, and many analysts think that he will develop into a solid player once he becomes more confident with his reads. Look for Hart to be the leading candidate for the starting job when training camp opens.
