SAN DIEGO, California - Keenan McCardell agreed to a 2 year contract extension with the San Diego Chargers through the 2007 season.

McCardell was the last holdout in 2004, missing the first 6 games - worth almost $710,000 in game checks - because he was unhappy his old ballclub (the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) didn't give him fair market value on a new deal he sought. He was subsequently shipped to San Diego on October 19 in exchange for the Chargers' third- and sixth-round choices in this year's draft.

Though McCardell caught 31 passes for 393 yards and 1 TD in 7 regular-season games, he did give the Chargers an intangible veteran presence. He was picked up 3 days after WR Reche Caldwell suffered a season-ending knee injury. He made 6 straight starts at one stretch for the Chargers before a hamstring injury sidelined him for the last 3 games. His addition to San Diego coincided with the beginning of an 8 game winning streak.

Coach Marty Schottenheimer said he still marvels at how McCardell was in such good shape - despite his holdout - that he was able to play right away for the Chargers.

The former UNLV Running Rebel was drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1991. He then played for the old Cleveland Browns (1992-1995), the Jacksonville Jaguars (1996-2001), and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2002-2003). The 13-year veteran has career totals which include 755 catches for 9,763 yards and 53 TDs. He has played in 14 career postseason games, with 55 catches for 622 yards and 6 TDs.
