SAN DIEGO, California - The San Diego Chargers released 42 year-old Doug Flutie. He had spent the last 4 seasons with San Diego after signing with the team as a free agent in 2001.

Mainly a mentor to starter Drew Brees and 2004 first-round pick Philip Rivers, Flutie played in just 2 games last year. He completed 20 of 38 passes for 276 yards and 1 touchdown. He also ran for 2 TDs, giving him 10 rushing TDs in his NFL career.

Flutie won the Heisman Trophy as college football's top player in 1984. He has passed for 14,686 yards and 86 TDs in 11 NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and Chargers.

Flutie also enjoyed a prolific career in the Canadian Football League and is one of just 6 players to pass for over 50,000 yards in a professional football career. Warren Moon, Dan Marino, John Elway, Damon Allen and Ron Lancaster are the others.

After winning 6 MVPs in 8 years in the CFL, Flutie started 30 games over 3 seasons with the Bills. He set a career high with 20 TD passes in 1998 and recorded his first 3,000 yard passing season (3,171) the next year.

Flutie started all 16 games for San Diego in 2001, recording a career-high 3,464 passing yards. He has played in just 10 games, including 6 starts, in the following 3 seasons.
