OK, you're missing three of your best defensive players in Shawne Merriman, Shaun Phillips and Igor Olshansky. On top of that, you're playing the Cleveland Browns at home, one of the worst teams in the NFL.

So, in other words, you're missing several of your big guns and are playing in a contest where you're ripe for a letdown.

Now add in that you're losing at halftime. In fact, things are bad enough for head coach Marty Schottenheimer to rip the entire team during the intermission. Where do you turn?

Answer: LaDainian Tomlinson

This past Sunday, the San Diego Chargers played an ugly game. It was the kind of contest that they should've lost if not for the fact that they have a future Hall of Famer on the roster. On Sunday, their superstar came through in a big way, taking 18 carries for 172 yards and three touchdowns.

That's right, he averaged 9.6 yards per carry. We know what you're thinking: only video game personnel muster that kind of performance.

Somehow on Sunday, then, Tomlinson managed to get 'animated.'

For a man that has played much of his career on a losing team, it must be nice to only have to carry the team on occasion. As Tomlinson said in CBS Sportsline wire report, "give me a little hole I can squeeze through into the secondary. Once I get into the secondary, things could get very interesting."

Well, Sunday was certainly proof of that. With Tomlinson, the Chargers have an offensive commodity that no other team can boast. He's the rare running back that only needs a little space to work in; the kind of back that would be good in any system.

In sum, he's the best overall running back in the NFL.
