The San Diego Chargers announced on Tuesday that they've agreed to terms with the second of their two 1st round picks in this past April's NFL Draft. Defensive tackle Luis Castillo agreed to terms on a five-year deal reportedly worth $7.035 million. The 6-foot-3 303 pounder out of Northwestern wasted no time hitting the practice field, as he inked his deal around noon time, and then headed off to the practice field in the afternoon to join his new teammates. Castillo was selected 28th overall by the team; their other 1st round selection, Shawn Merriman, a linebacker from Maryland, has yet to agree to a deal.

At Northwestern, Luis Castillo excelled on and off the field. He was not only a first-team All-American selection by Football Weekly, but also garnered first-team All-Academic honors. He led all Wildcat defensive linemen with 75 tackles, including 8 ½ tackles for loss. During his four years at Northwestern, he appeared in 42 games and notched a total of 251 tackles and 19 ½ tackles for loss. He also had 4 ½ sacks and 11 quarterback pressures.

Some scouts questioned the San Diego Chargers for selecting Castillo in the 1st round because he tested positive for steroids at the scouting combine heading up to the draft, but Castillo admitted he made the mistake of taking the illegal substance to help him deal with an elbow injury,. According to Chargers Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer, the team is real excited to have Castillo in the fold.
