Kansas City released its longest-tenured player, safety Greg Wesley, July 18, creating room for rookie DeJuan Morgan.

Wesley had been with the club since 2000. Morgan will likely fill Wesley's backup safety spot behind Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page.

Commentary: Veteran safeties without injury concerns don't stay on the market long. The Kansas City Star reported the Chiefs had an offer for a fourth-round pick from Denver for Wesley, but they didn't want to trade him to an AFC West rival.
