The annoying bird in the commercial should be saying "Croyle." The Kansas City Chiefs "purchased" Trent Green's insurance coverage in last month's NFL Draft in the form of quarterback Brodie Croyle.

The Alabama Crimson Tide product, selected in the third round, should fit in nicely as the backup to the veteran Trent Green. Standing 6'3" and weighing 205 pounds, Croyle is a strong armed quarterback who makes solid decisions, has decent speed, is pretty accurate, and has always performed admirably when healthy. Health seems to be his only issue, but if he can silence the injuries that have plagued him, he has all the potential in the world to take over for Green in a few years. He has already demonstrated his cannon for an arm in minicamp.

In his final two seasons at Alabama Croyle was exceptional. He threw 20 touchdowns to just four interceptions, completed 60.7% of his passes for 3,033 yards and tallied a 13-2 record, including a 13-10 victory over Texas Tech in last January's Cotton Bowl. In his senior season he racked up 2,499 yards, and had the Crimson Tide rolling along at a 9-0 record before falling to LSU by a mere three points.

The incumbent veteran starter, Green, has been tremendous since joining the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2001 season. He has eclipsed the 3,600 passing yard plateau in every season donning the red and white, and for three consecutive years has topped the 4,000-yard mark. From 2001-2005, he completed 62% of his passes for 12,644 yards, 111 touchdowns and 76 interceptions.

Chiefs' fans should expect another solid, Pro Bowl caliber season from the veteran who has been steady as can be as captain of the "U.S.S. Chiefs" ship, leading their potent offense to numerous victories. If Green were to succumb to injury, however, Croyle would provide good insurance. Surrounded by two extraordinary running backs, arguably the best offensive line in all of football, underrated receiver Eddie Kennison and elite tight end Tony Gonzalez, Croyle has all the weapons he could ask for. The rookie would likely be able to clot the wound and keep the Chiefs in the hunt.

Of course, this is only in the event of an injury to Green. Hopefully for the Chiefs' sake, they don't need to exercise their insurance option. But then again, they have what looks to be a solid insurance policy.
