The main reason football coaches schedule lesser teams to open a season is to give their own squad a warmup. But it also comes in handy in cases like the one involving All-America defensive tackle Terrill Byrd of the University of Cincinnati.

Byrd was given a citation for pot smoking in early March after a telltale odor wafting from his off-campus apartment was noticed by the wrong people (from Byrd's perspective). It was unclear whether the illegal substance had been ignited by Byrd, or someone else.

A subsequent report had him missing his court date, which made it sound like Byrd had become a fugitive. Actually, it was only a ticket -- $65, $90 in court courts, less than you'd get for speeding these days -- and Byrd wrote them a check.

Which is where Eastern Kentucky comes in. Coach Brian Kelly announced over the weekend that his promise to handle the matter "internally" had been fulfilled -- Byrd will be suspended for the EKU opener on Aug. 28.

Thank God they didn't decide to open with Ohio State.
