Who cares about spring football games? Obviously, in Cincinnati, a lot of people do -- the annual University of Cincinnati Bearcat Bowl drew over 10,000 last Saturday.

They left entertained (the Black team beat the Red, 23-14, in a lively contest), but no more informed about the Bearcats' quarterback competition than before. In the end, all three main contenders -- senior Dustin Grutza, redshirt freshman Chazz Anderson and Notre Dame transfer Demetrius Jones -- had their moments, with Jones' 57-yarder to Marshwan Gilyard providing the winning margin before a 67-yard interception return of Anderson by Ohio State transfer Brandon Underwood capped the scoring.

And, of course, there's always the slim chance that 2007 starter Ben Mauk (who watched from the sidelines Saturday) will win his appeal with the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility.

Jones wound up with 136 passing yards, while Grutza hit Armon Binns and Marcus Bennett for touchdowns and Anderson threw for 92 yards. Anderson, from Pickerington, Ohio, was also the second-leading rusher with 47 yards, trailing only John Goebel's 51.

On defense, head coach Brian Kelly was particularly pleased with the play of a couple of converted defensive ends -- former linebacker Corey Smith and ex-tight end Connor Barwin. Barwin chased Anderson all the way across the field to notch a sack and finished with six tackles for the Black. Robby Armstrong and Craig Carey had seven tackles apiece to lead the winners, Nick DeFillipo notched six tackles and a sack for the Red.
