It's now third down for University of Cincinnati quarterback -- or ex-University of Cincinnati quarterback -- Ben Mauk.

Earlier this week, Mauk had his second request for an extra year of eligibility denied on appeal by the NCAA. But, said Bearcats coach Brian Kelly, "This is just another step through the NCAA process and is nothing out of the ordinary."

Mauk sat out his first year at Wake Forest to heal a broken foot suffered in high school. Then, in 2006, he broke his right arm in Wake's opener with Syracuse and missed the rest of that season. Last year, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound Kenton, Ohio, product transferred to Cincinnati and wound up throwing for 3,121 yards and a school-record 31 touchdowns in leading the Bearcats to 10 victories and a bowl berth.

The NCAA rule is that a player has five years to finish four years of eligibility, but Mauk still has a meeting with the organization's Student Athlete Reinstatement Committee and a chance to fight for an exception.

Meanwhile, he's caught between college and professional football. He wasn't drafted last month (perhaps as much because of his injury history as the legal uncertainty) and is now continuing to work out in limbo, preparing to play for someone in 2008.
