Clemson is reportedly in the lead in getting a verbal commitment from top safety/wide receiver Craig Loston for the 2009 recruiting class. Loston is highly-rated on Rivals and Scout, with Scout specifically listing him as the top safety in the nation.

"I was going to commit to Clemson but my mom said to wait", Loston said. "My cousin (Russell Shepard) committed to LSU, and I like LSU, and my mom told me to wait until after I visit Clemson to give me something to compare."

Last year Loston had 68 tackles and three picks as a safety. As a receiver he snagged 17 passes for 847 yards and seven scores. Hailing from Aldine, Texas, Loston is 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, and runs the forty in 4.38 seconds.

In addition to Clemson, Loston reportedly has offers from LSU, Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, Texas A&M, USC, Michigan and Notre Dame.

Clemson tight end coach and recruiting coordinator Billy Napier is recruiting Loston.

Commentary: While 2009 is a full year away, it can only be considered a good thing that Clemson has interest from a top high school player. Given the list of schools Tommy Bowden and company are up against, it would be a huge get if Loston gives the Tiger program a solid verbal after he visits Clemson in April to attend the Orange-White spring game.
