Clemson running back James Davis had arthroscopic shoulder surgery Thursday due to an injury sustained during the March 13 scrimmage.

The Atlanta native has been the Tigers’ leading rusher the past three seasons and is a two-time first-team All-ACC. He’s racked up 3,130 yards and 38 scores during the past three seasons, in spite of shoulder issues the past two.

Head coach Tommy Bowden stated Davis’ surgery was “minor” and that "he will be ready for the offseason conditioning program and preseason practice in August."

Commentary: Davis’ performance in spite of shoulder issues is a testament to his toughness and unbreakable will to succeed. However it’s difficult to write off a shoulder injury as “minor”, as most surgeries of that type do leave lingering effects months or even years later. Nonetheless, whether Davis returns at 100 percent or not will significantly affect Clemson’s chances of the ever-elusive ACC title.
