Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden announced Monday the official dismissal of linebacker Cortney Vincent. The upcoming senior was arrested for DUI in December and was suspended for spring practice because of a violation of team rules.

"We outlined some goals for Cortney this spring," Bowden said. "While he would have been academically eligible to compete this year, he did not meet these goals during the spring semester."

Vincent, who racked up 68 tackles last season, would have been the lone returning starting linebacker. Redshirt freshman Brandon Maye is the likely candidate to replace Vincent at starter in 2008.

COMMENTARY: The Vincent dismissal was largely expected by fans, as Bowden was reportedly waiting for classes to be finished before pulling the trigger. The team, however, has clearly been planning around Vincent with how it conducted spring practice. This clearly didn't come as a surprise.
