As is the case just about every season, there are several Clemson Tigers football players hoping to be drafted in 2009. Of course, there will be some heartache over either not getting drafted or getting taken later than was hoped for some of their former players. The good thing for strong safety Michael Hamlin, however, is that heartache and disappointment are highly unlikely.

The stats:

2008: Hamlin accumulated a whopping 96 total tackles and six interceptions for 111 yards on the season. He also managed one sack and a forced fumble. As a result, he was named a first-team All-ACC performer.

2007: Hamlin started all 13 games, netting 80 tackles and four interceptions on the season. He also forced a fumble and caused six pass breakups, which together compelled his teammates to vote him a permanent defensive captain. He was second-team All-ACC.

2006: Hamlin amassed 63 total tackles and two interceptions on the season (90 yards in interception returns).

2005: Piled up 42 total tackles and two interceptions for 42 yards in returns.

Measurables: Hamlin is 6-foot-2, 207 pounds, giving him excellent size for the NFL. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds, and will be present at the NFL scouting combine.

Prediction: As pro executives and scouts continue to look at players with a fine-tooth comb, the guess is that Hamlin’s stock will rise. He has good speed and excellent size for the safety position at the next level. What’s more, no one can argue with the fact that he has performed at the major college level consistently for several years running.

Some think he could fall to the third round. That’s doubtful. Guess is that he’ll be either a very late first-round pick or, more likely, a second-round selection. He’ll make a good NFLer.
