With former starting quarterback Cullen Harper gone, a quarterback battle is sure to ensue for the Clemson Tigers as the 2009 season nears. Last season’s backup, Willy Korn, is the favorite, but there’s also athletic two-sport star Kyle Parker -- who may be even better at baseball than he is at football. But most fans who have been watching closely are also intrigued by another quarterback, incoming freshman Tajh Boyd.

Boyd is a 6-foot-1, 208-pound pro-style passer out of Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va., who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.7 seconds. Those legs of his managed to run for 500 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior in high school. However, it’s the 2,059 yards and 25 touchdowns he passed for during that same season that have the people at Clemson excited.

But the best part about Boyd is that he was a proven winner in high school, with is team going 15-0 and taking the Division 5 Championship during his senior year. Though his numbers weren’t as good -- only 1,500 yards passing and 23 touchdowns -- Boyd was integral in his team's perfect season.

Boyd has the arm strength and leadership to be a force in the ACC. Adding to the intrigue, he’s also strong (he reportedly benches 305 pounds and squats 425). The only knock on Boyd is that he needs to work on his decision-making, but that's common for young QBs.

While it's not likely Boyd will be Clemson's starting passer in '09, don't rule out a player of his ability.
