This Week’s Matchup Goes a Long Way Towards Cementing Clemson’s ’09 Legacy

Saturday brings the Clemson Tigers up against arguably the toughest opponent left on their schedule. With defensive end Da'Quan Bowers ruled out, Florida State QB Christian Ponder and electric wideout Bert Reed will find success far easier when they take the field.

Clemson coach Dabo Sweeney said, “If he's not able to play, that's a big blow to us. There's not many Da'Quan Bowers walking around out there, so it will be a challenge for our other guys to step it up."

However, despite the chink in the Clemson D-line’s armor, the Tigers are still the stronger team.

At this point in the season, the two teams have put an almost equal number of points on the board with Florida State scoring 254 and Clemson racking up 247, but the real stat that sets them apart is points given up. While Florida State has allowed opponents to plant 238 on the scoreboard, Clemson has only given up 132. 106 points over eight games comes out to nearly two touchdowns more per outing. That’s an advantage that clearly favors the Tigers.

Another point in favor of Clemson is their current 4-1 won/loss record at home. Florida State is 2-1 on the road, but those wins came over Brigham Young and North Carolina, one a contender, the other a pretender.

After that, it simply comes down to who wants it more. Florida State’s season is essentially over, due to their prior poor performances, especially if they lose this weekend. Clemson, however, has a shot at becoming the ACC Atlantic Division Champion for the first time since 1991.

However, never let it be said that anyone should underestimate the Seminoles, a team that’s proven they can slam 40+ points on the board on any given Saturday. What remains to be seen is if they can do it against the Tiger’s vaunted defense, while preventing Clemson’s offense from dishing 40+ right back at them.
