Clemson Tigers Stalk Championship

For the first time in eighteen years the Clemson Tigers have a chance to take the field this weekend and capture an ACC Championship, proving their program has what it takes to be remembered as winners. When most players sign their letters of intent, the thought of hoisting a trophy is forefront in their minds. For many, this is their chance to leave their mark on the game they love and become a part of history.

Many a young man dreams of scoring the game winning touchdown in the Superbowl, amidst deafening cheers of passionate fans. As young as five years old, they strap on their helmets and take the field, envisioning the long road ahead to Superbowl stardom. But, many never make it past the High School level, and, of those that do, a fraction make it to a prestigious collegiate program. From there, even fewer still land on an NFL roster.

For many of the men in orange, this weekend will mark the beginning of the end for their football lives. Knowing that, they can end this weekend one of two ways, as a team that went on a two game skid into a meaningless bowl game, or the team that turned it around and seized the once in a lifetime opportunity to play in the Orange Bowl as ACC Champions.

“People remember champions, and that's one of the reasons I came back for my senior year is to try to win the championship game,” Clemson’s star running back C.J. Spiller remarked. “That's something that hasn't been done here in 18 years, and I want to try to help this team accomplish that.”

While Spiller is all but guaranteed to be one of those men playing on Sunday next fall, far too many of his teammates will not. And, for Spiller, there are still no concrete promises he’ll make it to the NFL, or make an impact once he gets there.

So, for the Tigers, this weekend is far more than just a normal game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, this weekend is a benchmark in their lives, one they can stamp with greatness or smear with shame. While many say “it’s just a game” when Clemson runs out onto the field this weekend, every man in the organization will know there’s no “just” about it.

Every march to greatness begins with a step, and the Tigers have to take that step this weekend, proving they deserve to be remembered as champions.
