In 2006, the Clemson Tigers have a big task ahead of them since they will be without star quarterback Charlie Whitehurst for the first time in years. Over his career Whitehurst set 46 school records, and led the Tigers to 25 victories.

However, the Tigers are coming into the season with a lot of momentum. They return 15 starters from a team that knocked off Colorado in the 2005 Champs Sports Bowl.

The offense will be depending on quarterback Will Proctor to carry the load in 2006. Proctor served as Whitehurst's backup for the last two seasons, but has only taken 99 career snaps. Luckily for Proctor, he has two running backs in the backfield with him that are more than capable of carrying the load. James Davis, the ACC rookie of the year, finished his freshman campaign with 879 yards and nine touchdowns. He will be teaming up in the backfield with senior Reggie Merriweather who rushed for 715 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Proctor's main target will be wide receiver Chansi Stuckey. Stuckey led the ACC in receptions last season with 64, and he will definitely be able to make the transition a lot easier for Proctor.

For the Tigers, the 2006 season revolves around whether or not Proctor can step in and be a productive quarterback. He will have plenty of help at running back and receiver, as well as a good defense to lean on.

If all goes well, the Clemson Tigers should be poised to compete for the 2006 ACC title and a possible run at the BCS.
