Defense wins championships, and the 2006 version of the Clemson Tigers will try to take full advantage of that axiom. The Tigers return seven starters from a defense that ranked in the top 25 nationally in four defensive categories. That's scary when you consider that they allowed just 17.6 points per game last season; good for 11th best in the nation.

If Clemson is looking to have the same kind of production this year, seniors Gaines Adams and Anthony Waters are going to have to turn in big seasons. Both Adams and Waters considered leaving school early for the NFL draft, but ended up returning in hopes of leading the Tigers to an ACC crown.

Last season, Waters led the team with 109 tackles from his linebacker position. He also collected 1.5 sacks and seven pass break ups.

Up front, Adams was one of the most productive defensive ends in the entire country. He wreaked havoc all season long, and finished with 56 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles.

For additional support, the defense will also be looking to senior linebacker Tramaine Billie. He finished the season with 93 tackles, along with one sack and two pass break ups.

If the defense can turn in a performance similar to that of the 2005 team, the Clemson Tigers may find themselves playing for the ACC championship at the end of the season.
