With the graduation of Thomas Hunter, Clemson tight end Durrell Barry has an opportunity to grab the starting position. The rising redshirt sophomore only had two receptions last year but has the athletic ability to create havoc in the middle of the field.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 250 pounds, Barry is a load to take down in the open field. He's more than just another big body, though -- he showed off his athleticism by playing some quarterback for Fork Union Military Prep School. The North Charleston, S.C., native has good hands, too. In fact, he hauled in 66 balls for 1,126 yards and 11 scores as a senior in high school.

With a new quarterback and a rebuilt offensive line, the Tigers' coaching staff is likely to try and establish the tight end as part of the passing game in 2007. Last year, Hunter had 16 receptions for 305 yards as the primary tight end. Clemson fans should expect to see more passes thrown to the tight ends in '07, and Barry could be the chief benefactor.

He is big enough to get off the line and not be a liability as a blocker. Although he only caught two passes in '06, Barry did get plenty of action as a blocker. With the added confidence of being a starter and a little more time in the weight room, he could be a devastating run blocker.

Barry displayed his speed in the Music City Bowl, burning the Kentucky coverage for a 32-yard touchdown reception. The Clemson coaches are hoping that was just a prelude to what the future will bring for the talented youngster.

If Barry continues to develop and improve to the level his coaches expect, he will be a nice piece of the Clemson offense. Offensive coordinator Rob Spence has been outspoken about his wishes to have the Tiger tight ends become a bigger part of the passing offense. It wouldn't be out of the question for Barry to eventually have enough passes thrown his way to have a 30-reception season before he graduates. Without an established go-to wide receiver, there will be chances for Barry and the other tight ends to expand their roles and make plays.

Next year, Clemson fans will probably get to see a lot more of Durrell Barry. And fortunately for them, he appears to be ready to step into a starting role.
