Young Swinney could be Clemson’s next O-coordinator

Many Clemson insiders believe receivers coach Dabo Swinney is being groomed to be the school's next offensive coordinator. While current O-coordinator Rob Spence has improved the offensive output in the two years he has been with the Tigers, not everyone is pleased with the conservative approach being employed.

Swinney was recently promoted to assistant head coach after he rejected an offer to coach for his alma mater, Alabama. Rumor has it that the young coach would have been promoted to offensive coordinator had Spence left the program for a new job this offseason.

A former member of the Crimson Tide football team, Swinney is respected as one of the top recruiters in college football. Clemson has always had a reputation as a run-first, defensive program, but Swinney's coaching has produced two ACC pass reception champions -- Airese Currie and Chansi Stuckey. This marks the first time two different Tigers receivers have led the league in receptions in consecutive years.

He has a well-earned reputation as one of the top recruiters in the nation, too. In 2006, Swinney was listed as the fifth-best recruiter in the nation by Rivals.com. It marked the second straight year he was lauded by the Web site as a top-25 national recruiter.

Thanks largely to Swinney, the Tigers' last two recruiting classes have consistently been picked in the nation's top 20. He signed a total of 21 players in his first four recruiting seasons, and many of them have already contributed greatly.

The hard-working Swinney is just the type of coach Tommy Bowden needs to lock up with a big contract. Spence has made improvements to the Tigers' offense, but Swinney just might be the man to take the unit to the next level for Clemson.
