Some of the comments coming out of Clemson this spring make it sound as if the Tigers' coaches are looking to revamp the offense. Coordinator Rob Spence has been quoted as wanting to open up the passing game, something many fans were calling for most of last season.

Last year, the Tigers put up big numbers in the first eight games but were too predictable. They were able to overpower the early opponents with an impressive run game, but once the team was forced to pass, things went south in a hurry.

It appears that Cullen Harper is establishing himself as the early candidate to be the starting quarterback. Considering Harper has the most experience, it won't be a surprise if he wins the job; however, freshman Willy Korn will likely see playing time at some point. The real questions concern how much head coach Tommy Bowden and Spence will open up the passing attack with inexperienced quarterbacks, and how short a leash Harper will have.

Will Proctor, the Tigers' QB last season, was given an extremely long leash, and that is not likely to be the case with Harper in 2007. With the talented Korn sitting in the wings, most expect Harper to get pulled if his play is not much better than Proctor's was in '06.

Hopefully, for Clemson's sake, opening up the passing game doesn't mean more bubble screens. The Tigers have some talent at the wide receiver positions, so it would be a shame to not utilize the forward pass more in 2007. Word is that rising sophomore tailback C.J. Spiller could see some time in the slot. If that actually comes to fruition this year, he would be a great weapon in the open field.

The coaches have stated that they want to play both Spiller and James Davis in the backfield together to keep each of the two ball carriers happy. Davis was upset that his carries (and his production) went down after the Georgia Tech game last year. Both players were noticeably angry after neither got many touches in the Tigers' Music City Bowl loss.

Bowden and Spence will have to walk a fine line to keep both backs satisfied with their roles in '07, especially if the offense is going to commit to improving the passing game. Of course, if the Tigers can throw the ball, they will open up more running lanes -- but that is still a big if.

With the growing dissatisfaction among the alumni, fan base and administration after last years sour end to a season of promise, Bowden must get the offense ironed out in time for the opener against Florida State.
