Clemson’s Grisham to be counted on in 2007

Tyler Grisham operates under the radar for the Clemson Tigers. The junior wideout was actually the third-leading receiver last year with 25 catches, but he gets very little press. The hulking physique of Rendrick Taylor and the blazing speed of Jacoby Ford make for more exciting copy.

Aaron Kelly is expected to reemerge as the leader of the receivers, but Grisham will play an important role. No matter who is taking the snaps at quarterback, the Tigers will need someone to make the tough catches in the middle of the field. Grisham, a Birmingham, Ala., native, has shown that he has a knack for those types of play.

He isn't the biggest player, or the fastest, but Grisham manages to consistently get the job done. His three receiving touchdowns tied him for the team led in 2006. He managed to save the best for last too: Grisham caught a season-high five passes and scored a touchdown in the Tigers' otherwise forgettable Music City Bowl loss to Kentucky.

Although his 25 receptions were only good for 264 yards, that shouldn't be held against the young wideout. He was often asked to run shorter patterns and was mostly the receiver QB Will Proctor looked for on third down. Grisham has deceptive speed and could be used on more deep plays this year. There were a few times where he was open down the field last year, but the quarterback either didn't see him or couldn't make the pass.

Grisham gives it his all every play and the coaches have praised his practice habits. He has worked on his blocking and is a more complete player than when he entered school. He won't leave Clemson with any records, but Grisham will be missed.

Rob Spence and the offense will be counting on Grisham again in 2007. He probably won't lead the team in receptions or yards, though; in fact, his numbers could go down with an influx of new receivers and the coaches' desires to get running back C.J. Spiller more involved in the passing game. However, it is very likely that Grisham will make a big catch at some point in the season when the Tigers really need it. That's just the kind of player he is.
