Clemson defensive end Ricky Sapp is taking his job very seriously this offseason. All Sapp is being asked to do is replace former All-American Gaines Adams at the bandit position -- a hybrid of end and outside linebacker. Adams will be remembered as one of the best Tiger defenders in years, but the scary news for opponents is that Sapp has the potential to be even better.

The sophomore was always fast, but now he has packed on an additional 30 pounds to his frame, bringing him up to 247. Of course, he has more weight to gain - Adams tipped the scales at 260 pounds - but the talented Sapp hopes to add a few more pounds before the season starts.

Apparently, Sapp's speed was not sacrificed as he noted that he was timed at 4.43 in the 40-yard dash recently. Last year, he wasn't strong enough to bull his way into the backfield on a consistent basis and had to rely on his speed. Now he appears well on his way to becoming a complete package.

The maturation of Sapp is a key element to the success of the defense. In 2006 the Tigers did not blitz very much; they preferred to sit back in a zone and relied on the front four to create pressure on their own. Adams was responsible for most of that pressure, although Phillip Merling played well, too. Now that Adams is in the NFL, Clemson needs someone else on the D-line to step up, and it looks as though Sapp will be that player.

Sapp played well last season, totaling 18 tackles and four sacks as a reserve, and he also forced a fumble and preserved a six-point win over North Carolina State with a game-ending sack.

While Sapp probably won't match Adams' numbers this year, he should help anchor the defensive line. As he gains experience and perfects some pass-rushing moves, this young player could end up threatening several of Clemson's defensive records.
