An improbable season for the University of Virginia football team just got a little dicier.

The 8-2 Cavaliers were hoping that RB Cedric Peerman could somehow get past a foot injury in time to help the team down the stretch. But on Monday, team doctors decided to shut Peerman down for the season pending a decision on whether he might need surgery.

Injured against Middle Tennessee, Peerman was leading the ACC in rushing at the time with 585 yards.

"He was the perfect back for this team," coach Al Groh said.

Commentary: So far, though, Mikell Simpson has done an outstanding job in relief. As long as he stays healthy, Virginia can survive the loss of Peerman.
