The choice faced by college football juniors with professional aspirations might be compared to a game of blackjack.

If you're projected as lower than a second-round pick, do you hold on your previous record and jump, or do you gamble on having a better season as a senior?

Mike Mickens' performance for the University of Cincinnati will be tough to top -- but after hearing that he was regarded as, at best, a third-round pick in this year's draft, the Bearcat cornerback said: "hit me." In other words, he elected to remain a Bearcat for one more season.

Ranked 17th by the AP at the end of the season, 10-3 Cincinnati led the nation in takeaways (42) and interceptions (28) -- and the 6-foot, 190-pound Mickens did his part with six picks, returning two of them for touchdowns.

"We have a great schedule next year, which should challenge us," Mickens said on the UC Web site. "I'm on track to graduate next January, which will make my Mom happy."

One factor in Mickens' favor is that fellow DB DeAngelo Smith (eight interceptions) also returns, meaning teams won't be able to throw away from Mickens.
