Longtime Pitt defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads is heading south.

Auburn University announced Thursday that it had hired Rhoads for the same job, replacing the departed Will Muschamp (now at Texas). The school had previously offered the defensive coordinator position to Rhoads in 2002.

Rhoads was a finalist for the top position at Pitt several years ago, but lost out to Dave Wannstedt. His last game after eight years as the Panthers' DC may have been his most satisfying, as Pitt shocked arch-rival West Virginia in the Backyard Brawl, 13-9, holding the explosive Mountaineer offense to under 300 yards.
