As Neil Sedaka told us years ago, breaking up is hard to do. Just ask Rich Rodriguez.

Rodriguez turned in his resignation as head football coach at West Virginia University on Dec. 16 and accepted the same job at the University of Michigan. And as far as Mountaineer Nation was concerned, Rodriguez didn't just burn a bridge -- they wanted him to be on it when it burned.

Among other things, reports surfaced that Rodriguez had swiped confidential files on players from the athletic department (although why he would do that is a mystery, because none of those players will be going to Ann Arbor with him) and that he had called Wolverine recruits on a West Virginia-issued cellphone.

WVU is also suing Rodriguez to collect a $4 million buyout clause.

In addition, angry WVU supporters vandalized his home and that of his parents near Morgantown and issued a death threat to at least one of his West Virginia relatives.

Obviously, they didn't take it well.

As for Rodriguez, he finally broke his silence on the matter in an interview with the Toledo Blade.

"How can you put out lies and say it's OK?" Rodriguez told the Blade. "It doesn't matter what the truth is -- they just want to smear Rich Rodriguez.

"What they're implying, to me, attacks my integrity, and that's why I'm upset."
