After a long coaching apprenticeship elsewhere, former West Virginia University football star David Johnson is finally back home.

Johnson, who started at center for two Mountaineer bowl teams in the 1980s, was hired earlier this week by new head coach Bill Stewart to handle the team's offensive line.

For the previous seven years, Johnson has coached tight ends (including current pros Randy McMichael, Ben Watson and Leonard Pope) at the University of Georgia, where he was one of Mark Richt's first hires.

Before that, Johnson coached at Marshall and Indiana) University in Pennsylvania.

Said Stewart of Johnson, "He pays complete attention to detail, has an outstanding ability to communicate effectively and has an exceptional ability to stress the fundamentals to the players."
