Whatever Dan McCarney told George Selvie last season, it must have worked.

The sophomore defensive end had a monster year for the University of South Florida Bulls in 2007, notching 31 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks. Selvie will be back in 2008 -- and so, it turns out, will McCarney.

Earlier this week, the assistant head coach and defensive ends withdrew his name from consideration for the head coaching position at the University of South Alabama.

Maybe his prior experience at Iowa State had something to do with his decision. After 11 years at Iowa State, where he took the Cyclones to five bowls, McCarney stepped down on Nov. 8, 2006, in the midst of what would be a 4-8 season. He took the job with South Florida three months later.

Commentary: Former head coaches often have a strong track record as assistants, because they're able to see the big picture. And McCarney obviously had good chemistry with 2007 DEs Selvie and Jarriett Buie (14 TFL, 13 quarterback hurries). All in all, a definite plus for USF.
