Now you see him, now you don't.

Just a week after withdrawing his name from the head coaching job at South Alabama, South Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney is leaving the Bulls' program for an assistants' job with the University of Florida.

He didn't make it sound like a tough choice.

"I'm thrilled to be joining the Gator Nation," McCarney said. "It is a dream come true for me."

Commentary: As it turned out, McCarney was really a single-season rent-a-coach, having found South Florida a soft place to fall after quitting as head coach at Iowa State after a dozen years (including five bowl seasons).

"I will always have fond memories of my time as a Bull," McCarney said.

And, certainly, of working with then-sophomore George Selvie, who posted 31 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks.

McCarney's now ex-boss, USF head coach Jim Leavitt, said of McCarney: "He's an excellent coach who will always be a good friend."

Except that now, Leavitt will have to find someone else to coach George Selvie.
