The Cincinnati Bearcats did a little coach shuffling this week, drawing William Inge from the wild card pile and returning Tim Hinton to his former spot in the deck.

This was all necessitated by the exit of Brian Kelly assistant Ernest Jones, who took the head coaching job at his alma mater, Alcorn State.

Hinton, a defensive backs coach in 2007, will return to the running backs. Part of the reason is that the Bearcats will lose their top three 2007 rushers, Butler Benton, Bradley Glatthaar and Greg Moore. In 2006 under Hinton, this trio managed 1,358 collective yards and 10 touchdowns. Last season, Hinton's tutelage on the other side of the ball helped the Bearcats finished tied for the lead nationally in takeaways with 42.

Inge, meanwhile, comes over from San Diego State to coach the Bearcat linebackers. Last season, one of Inge's position players -- Russell Davis -- posted 119 tackles and was co-leader in the Mountain West with tackles per outing in league games.

In 2005, Inge was defensive line coach at Colorado, preceded by two years as Northern Iowa's defensive coordinator.

He lettered all four years on defense for the University of Iowa, finishing with 173 tackles, 37 tackles for loss and 24 sacks and earning a reputation for aggressiveness and hustle (he was given the team's Hustle Award as a junior) . After graduation, he spent a year with the Tennessee Titans.

Commentary: Inge will bring some high energy to the Bearcats, as well as a proven track record as a recruiter (he served as recruiting coordinator at Iowa). Hinton, meanwhile, seems to succeed wherever he's placed.

"I asked Tim to move back to working with the running backs," Kelly said, "because I need a veteran coach at that position."
