As a star defensive back at Delaware, Bryan Bossard learned how to cover wide receivers. Since then, he's learned how to coach them.

On Friday, the University of Pittsburgh announced it had hired Bossard as the team's receivers' coach, a job he had previously held for three seasons at the University of Maryland.

In both 2007 and 2006, Bossard (pronounced, for some reason, BREW-sard) tutored freshmen All-America receivers -- LaQuan Williams last season and Darius Heyward-Bey the year before. In 2003, when he was at Delaware, three different Blue Hen wideouts caught more than 50 passes.

Commentary: It's all about connections in the college football world, and Bossard and Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt have known each other since Wannstedt coached the Chicago Bears and Bossard was an intern.

"Our receivers are going to benefit tremendously from Bryan's experience and teaching abilities," Wannstedt said.

Bossard will have a lot to work with in his first Panther season. Pitt returns its top five wide receivers, led by T.J. Porter and Oderick Turner, and just signed one of the top wideouts in the country in Jonathan Baldwin, 6-foot-6 with sprinters' speed. The new coach's challenge will be how to find enough touches for all that talent (Baldwin could be red-shirted, but it's hard to imagine).
