Syracuse University offensive tackle Jonathan Meldrum -- a part-time starter in 2007 -- will miss spring practice after undergoing "microfracture" knee surgery this week.

The 6-foot-5, 327-pound Meldrum, ranked as the No. 23 prep school prospect out of Hargrave Military Academy by both Rivals.com and SuperPrep two years ago, was regarded as one of the more promising members of an Orange O-line that was abysmal in 2007. As a freshman, Meldrum shared the starting job at right tackle with Larry Norton, who will graduate this spring.

Commentary: The Syracuse line gave up 54 sacks and contributed to an average of only 3 yards per running play last season, but Meldrum is considered to have potential. On the down side, he first injured his knee in prep school and wore a brace most of last season.

If Meldrum can't recover by the fall, either Tucker Baumbach or Corey Chavers, competing at left tackle, will probably be shifted to the other side.
