The first day of Dan Conley's new job as linebackers' coach at Syracuse University, he got up at 4 a.m. That's how excited he was.

"This is the only job I've ever wanted," said Conley, a star at Syracuse from 1990 to 1994 and named a member of the school's All-Century team as a linebacker.

The opening occurred when Steve Russ, the Orange's linebacker coach and defensive coordinator, took a job at Wake Forest. Conley, who set a freshman record with 126 tackles in 1990, was coaching linebackers at Wagner College on Staten Island when he got the call from Syracuse head coach Greg Robinson.

Meanwhile, Robinson promoted defensive line coach Derrick Jackson to co-defensive coordinator -- along with himself.

Commentary: The linebacking corps was a problem area for Syracuse last season (except, perhaps, for Jake Flaherty) and Conley's infusion of energy can only help.

As for the defensive coordinators' job, it is generally understood that Jackson will expand his practice field and staff meeting role with the defense, while Robinson -- a highly praised DC at Texas -- will call the plays on game day.
