Texas A&M hired Joe Kines on Wednesday to be the Aggies' assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. He replaces Reggie Herring, who left College Station less than a month later to join the Dallas Cowboys.

Aggie head coach Mike Sherman said, "He loves his players and he loves football and demonstrates that passion in his coaching. No one I have ever hired has a greater pedigree or more experience than Coach Kines."

The 63-year-old Kines indeed brings a wealth of coaching experience, including stints at Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Arkansas and Alabama. Kines was interim head coach at Arkansas and Alabama and also has NFL experience from his time in Tampa Bay, coaching the Buccaneer linebackers during the late 1980s.

Commentary: This is a good hire by Sherman. Kines does indeed have a strong SEC coaching pedigree and a dash of NFL experience for good measure. More often than not, a good and experienced SEC coach like Kines is a great get for just about any school.
