A season that didn’t last Long

University of Louisville wide receiver Scott Long is gone for the season after an ACL injury suffered in practice this week.

Gone, but not forgotten. According to the Louisville Courier-Journal, fellow wideout Trent Guy will wear Long's No. 84 against Syracuse on Saturday. The next week, Doug Beaumont will don the number -- the week after that, Josh Chichester or Troy Pacsley.

There may be some football legalities to work out, but that's the plan.

Football can be a cruel sport. Long punished himself in his rehab routines to overcome a broken left foot suffered in preseason, watching his team suffer from the lack of a consistent deep threat in the process. Long finally returned to the lineup two weeks ago, and last week caught two touchdown passes from Hunter Cantwell in a 24-20 upset of then-No. 14 South Florida. Then came the injury to his right knee.

It will be up to Guy -- himself a comeback story after being shot in the back outside a nightclub over the summer -- to give Cantwell the opportunity to dial long distance. Otherwise, the Cardinals will have to resort to possession-type passes to Beaumont and the 6-foot-8 freshman Chichester.

"I'm very disappointed for Scott," said UL coach Steve Kragthorpe.

And, obviously, for his team. But at least Kragthorpe will still be able to call Long's number.
