Week 1 in ACC football contained a couple of surprises as well as several games that were no surprise at all. The best of the bunch was the clash between Florida State and Miami on Monday night that was reminiscent of some their great matchups in years past. Both of these teams proved that they belong in the upper echelons of the conference and I expect them both to vie for the conference title this year. So, after all is said and done in week one here are my power rankings for the ACC going into week 2.

1. Virginia Tech 0-1 (0-0)

The Hokies vaunted defense gave up 498 yards to Alabama while their offense gained only 155. But this game was closely contested until the 4th quarter and I will not beat them up too badly for losing to a higher ranked opponent. They are still the team to beat in the ACC.

Next game: vs. Marshall (9-12)

2. Georgia Tech 1-0 (0-0)

The Yellow Jackets gained 335 yards on the ground which gives the rest of the conference a sense of what they have to look forward to when they face this team. However, they will have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. Five fumbles will bury them against a better opponent than Jacksonville St.

Next game: vs. Clemson (9-10)

3. UNC 1-0 (0-0)

Defense may be their strong suit this year. They held the Citadel to a paltry 153 yards of offense.

Next game: @ UConn (9-12)

4. Miami 1-0 (1-0)

Jacory Harris threw for 386 yards and Miami came out on top in a slugfest with Florida State. This could signal a return to prominence for the Hurricanes this season.

Next game: vs. GA Tech (9-17)

5. Florida State 0-1 (0-1)

They had a chance to win at the end but couldn't quite finish the deal. Their run defense was good, holding Miami to 90 yards on the ground. This team will not lose many games this year.

Next game: vs. Jacksonville St. (9-12)

6. Clemson 1 1-0 (0-0)

Kyle Parker made a strong showing and should have a firm grasp on the starting QB job. Andre Ellington and Jamie Harper combined for 147 yards on the ground in place of the injured CJ Spiller. Their first real test comes this week in Atlanta.

Next game: @ GA Tech (9-10)

7. Boston College 1-0 (0-0)

The QB question did not get answered this week as both Justin Tuggle and David Shinskie were effective in action against Northeastern. Montel Harris rushed for 104 yards and scored three touchdowns.

Next game: vs. Kent St. (9-12)

8. NC State 0-1 (0-0)

Is South Carolina's defense that good or is the NC State offense that bad? The Wolfpack was held to 3 points and just could not get anything going. The defense did a good job holding the Gamecocks to 7 points.

Next game: vs. Murray St. (9-12)

9. Wake Forest 0-1 (0-0)

Riley Skinner threw three interceptions and the defense gave up 197 yards on the ground to Baylor. They needed a stop at the end to have a chance to win and couldn't get it.

Next game: vs. Stanford (9-12)

10. Maryland 0-1 (0-0)

The Maryland defense had no answers for Cal running back Jahvid Best who ran for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns. This was the worst opening game loss for Maryland since their very first game in 1892, a 50-0 loss to St. John's of Annapolis.

Next game: vs. James Madison (9-12)

11. Duke 0-1 (0-0)

Don't worry Blue Devil fans. Basketball season is just 3 months away.

Next game: @ Army (9-12)

12. Virginia 0-1 (0-0)

I wonder who the new Virginia coach will be?

Next game: vs. TCU (9-12)
