Week 3 in the ACC saw weaknesses exposed (Georgia Tech, Boston College) and legitimate BCS contenders start to separate themselves from the pack (Miami, VA Tech, Florida State).

1. Virginia Tech 2-1 (0-0) beat Nebraska 16-15

Tyrod Taylor engineered a late 4th quarter drive to steal a win from Nebraska and conserve their now 32 straight non-conference wins at home. Freshman Ryan Williams rushed for 107 yards. This week they face a Miami team eager to establish themselves as the front runner in the Coastal division.

Next game: vs. Miami (9-26)

2. Miami 2-0 (2-0) beat Georgia Tech 33-17

This game was not as close as the score might indicate as Miami dominated the Yellow Jackets outgaining them 453-228. Jacory Harris is the real deal as he threw for 270 yards and 3 touchdown against a Georgia Tech secondary that has struggled in the last two games. A win over VA Tech this week would establish the Hurricanes as the team to beat in the ACC.

Next game: @ VA Tech (9-26)

3. Florida State 2-1 (0-1) beat BYU 54-28

The Seminoles were simply too fast for BYU as they outrushed them 313-108. Christian Ponder was a very efficient 21 for 26 for 195 yards and two touchdowns.

Next game: vs. South Florida (9-26)

4. UNC 3-0 (0-0) beat East Carolina 31-17

The Tar Heel defense continues to shine as they held ECU to 247 yards of offense. This unit will be tested this week.

Next game: @ GA Tech (9-26)

5. Georgia Tech 2-1 (1-1) lost to Miami 33-17

The Georgia Tech secondary suddenly looks very vulnerable after struggling to stop both Clemson's and Miami's passing attacks. The rest of the conference should take note of how both Clemson and Miami shut down their triple option attack.

Next game: vs. UNC (9-26)

6. Clemson 2-1 (1-1) beat Boston College 25-7

The Clemson defense absolutely stifled the Eagles, holding them to 55 yards of offense. It is troubling that the Clemson offense could not find the endzone all day long.

Next game: vs. TCU (9-26)

7. NC State 2-1 (0-0) beat Gardner Webb 45-14

The Wolfpack played another glorified scrimmage against an FCS foe. They will be tested this week against a highly regarded Pitt team as they open their season with four consecutive non-conference games.

Next game: vs. Pitt (9-26)

8. Wake Forest 2-1 (0-0) beat Elon 35-7

It's hard to get a read on this Wake Forest team but their seeming lack of offensive firepower will be problematic when they start conference play.

Next game: @ Boston College (9-26)

9. Boston College 2-1 (0-1) lost to Clemson 25-7

The Eagles generated absolutely no offense against Clemson. Their defense did not allow the Tiger offense to score a touchdown.

Next game: vs. Wake Forest (9-26)

10. Duke 1-2 (0-0) lost to Kansas 44-16

I salute the Blue Devils for playing a tough road game like this but this team is still years away from respectability.

Next game: vs. NC Central (9-26)

11. Maryland 1-2 (0-0) lost to Middle Tennessee State 32-31

The Terrapins lost for the second straight year to MTSU and has struggled with both of the FCS teams that they have played this year. That does not bode well for the immediate future of this team.

Next game: vs. Rutgers (9-26)

12. Virginia 0-3 (0-0) lost to Southern Miss 37-34

Tick tock. Tick tock. Al Groh's time as head coach is slipping away.
