Gulls drop 77 on Builders in ACFC match up

Jr quarterback Sean Kelly (Fallston, Md.) had a career-high 146 yards and three touchdowns while sophomore slotback Jonathan Briscoe (Waldorf, Md.) picked up 125 all-purpose yards and three scores as the pair helped lead the Salisbury University football team TD's in a 77-7 win over The Apprentice School Builders of 1,634 this past Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium. The 77 SU put up ties the conference record for most points scored in an Atlantic Central Football Conference game and is also a tie for second in the school history matching Salisbury's 77 points against the Builders back in2005.

Gulls head coach Sherman Wood said afterwords "Overall, I thought we did a really good job today," Wood went on to add "We had to play hard. We needed to execute our plan and win the special teams game. The defense came out and made a couple big plays when we needed it. The option was executed to perfection and we thought that our receivers, with our size, could be really physical against their secondary. We wanted to test them and we did just that."

SU (3-2, 1-0 ACFC) had 14 season-highs against the Builders (1-4, 0-1 ACFC) in first downs (27), total offense (606), rushing yards (460), pass yards (146), kickoff yardage (630) and sacks (8).

Salisbury had seven players pick up at least 25 yards rushing with junior slotback Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.) the leader with a game-high 120 yards with two TD's. Freshman slotback Brandon Norwood (Bear, Del.) made the most of his first collegiate action with 2 touchdowns for 64 yards (his 1st two plays ever) The Gulls were aided by the rushing efforts of Briscoe, Tyler Curley (Ellicott City, Md.) and Evan Zedler (Gaithersburg, Md.), all picking up one TD. Sophomore kicker Tommy Kowalick (Sterling, Va.) was a perfect 9-for-9 on extra point attempts and booted nine kickoffs for a season-high 509 yards (56.6 average). Punter Andrew Geisert had a PAT and kicked off after the last Salisbury score.

SU's D continued its stellar play as they tied a season-high with eight sacks, two from senior defensive end Paul Cynewski (Moorestown, N.J.) a deuce from sophomore defensive lineman Josh Fredrick (Germantown, Md.). Cynewski's also had four solo tackles and a forced fumble. Junior linebacker Justin Chura (Lothian, Md.) had a game-high eight tackles (four solo) and a fumble recovery with sophomore linebacker Matt Leon (Hillsborough, N.J.) picking up seven tackles (three solo) himself.

The Gulls turned the ball over twice early but back-to-back big TD runs gathered by Woolson gave the Sea Gulls a 14-0 lead after in the 1st quarter. The game was an offensive explosion in the second 2nd period when senior DB and reigning ACFC Defensive Player of the Week, Brandon Hudson (Delmar, Md.) ran back a 79-yard punt for a TD and Briscoe added two scores to make it 35-0 at the half.

Kelly threw two more touchdown passes early in the third.The reigning ACFC Offensive Player of the Week's second toss was to Briscoe, who was on the receiving end of four passes for a team-high 72 yards with 2 TD's. Kelly also connected with wide outs Colin Nahum (Cambridge, Md.) and D.J. Nelson (Mullica Hills, N.J.) as both caught receptions for 38 and 36 yards, respectively.

The Builders finally broke up the shut out when Reggie George ran 67 yards to the end zone midway through the third stanza but the Gulls fired back with big TD runs to finish the game. Curley bolted in from 20 yards and Norwood scored on back-to-back possessions, including a 61-yard touchdown gallop on his first college carry. SU had its longest drive of the game (10 plays, 80 yards) when Zedler scored ran in from 29 yards out with just under a minute remaining in the contest.

Apprentice were led in the game by George (118 yards rushing, one touchdowns) and SR QB Phil Caralla (153 yards passing). De'Ray Lucien had143 multi-purpose yards with Aaron Finley and Louis Norwood had team-highs with six tackles apiece.

SU enjoys it's bye week this Saturday and will go on the for to face Lake Erie College on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m., before returning home to entertain Union College (N.Y.) for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 12 noon. Last year, the Gulls beat the "Storm" (Lake Erie), 39-15.

Great play has been noticed again this week for SU, with three Sea Gulls receiving ACFC (Atlantic Central Football Conference) Player of the Week honors today. The acknowledgments came from the players' performances in the maroon and gold's decisive 77-7 victory over The Apprentice School this past Saturday.

Freshman slot back Brandon Norwood (Bear, Del.) garnered ACFC Rookie of the Week honors for his performance against the Builders, with 64 yards and two scores in the win. ACFC Defensive Co-Player of the Week honors went to defensive lineman Paul Cynewski (Moorestown, N.J.), as the senior had four solo tackles and a forced fumble.

Senior defensive back Brandon Hudson (Delmar, Md.), the reigning ACFC Defensive Player of the Week, is the ACFC Special Teams Player of the Week after he ran a punt back 79 yards resulting in a TD. The Gulls' victory on Saturday was one for the record book, as SU tied the mark for most points scored (77) in an ACFC football game.
