After 5 weeks of action it certainly appears that the ACC is a balanced conference full of teams capable of winning on any given weekend. Or maybe this is really just a mediocre conference with only a couple of legitimate BCS contenders. Either way here is how the power rankings shake out this week.

1. Virginia Tech 4-1 (2-0) beat Duke 34-26

The Hokies almost got caught napping against the Blue Devils after their big win over Miami last week. Thaddeus Lewis threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns against the Virginia Tech secondary.

Next game: vs. Boston College (10-10)

2. Miami 3-1 (2-1) beat Oklahoma 21-20

Miami showed great character in shaking off an embarrassing loss to Virginia Tech last week to beat the Sam Bradford-less Sooners. Jacory Harris threw three touchdown passes and Javarris James ran for 150 yards.

Next game: vs. Florida A&M (10-10)

3. Georgia Tech 4-1 (2-1) beat Mississippi St. 42-21

Josh Nesbitt had a big day against an overmatched Bulldog squad. The Yellow Jackets converted three Miss. St. turnovers into touchdowns.

Next game: @ Florida State (10-10)

4. Boston College 4-1 (2-1) beat Florida State 28-21

The Eagles move up 4 spots in the power rankings after a victory over Florida State that puts them in the driver's seat in the Atlantic division. Montel Harris ran for 179 yards and Dave Shinskie threw two touchdown passes. We will find out this week if this team is for real.

Next game: @ Virginia Tech (10-10)

5. Wake Forest 3-2 (1-1) beat NC State 30-24

Riley Skinner threw for a career high 361 yards and three touchdowns as the Demon Deacons took advantage of a weak NC State secondary. The resilient Deacons are showing that they are not a team to be taken lightly.

Next game: vs. Maryland (10-10)

6. NC State 3-2 (0-1) lost to Wake Forest 30-24

The Wolfpack has serious issues on the defensive side of the ball that must be corrected unless they want to be in a shootout every week. They face a Duke team this week that leads the conference in passing offense so they may be ripe for an upset.

Next game: vs. Duke (10-10)

7. UNC 3-2 (0-2) lost to Virginia 16-3

The Tar Heels are reeling after opening conference play with two straight losses. They were held to 174 yards of offense and 3 points by a Cavalier defense that had surrendered 31 points per game in it's previous 3 games. This team was in the top 25 just two weeks ago.

Next game: vs. Georgia Southern (10-10)

8. Florida State 2-3 (0-2) lost to Boston College 28-21

The calls for Bobby Bowden's retirement are getting louder as the once mighty Seminoles are on the road to another sub-par season. Things don't get any easier this week with Georgia Tech coming to town. Could the team that once ran roughshod over the rest of the conference be looking at an 0-3 start?

Next game: vs. Georgia Tech (10-10)

9. Clemson 2-3 (1-2) lost to Maryland 24-21

The Tigers slip three places in the power rankings after an inexplicable loss to a very weak Maryland team. The Clemson offense is simply not producing this year as they have scored only three offensive touchdowns in the last three games.

Next game: vs. Wake Forest (10-17)

10. Duke 2-3 (0-1) lost to Virginia Tech 34-26

The Blue Devils gave Virginia Tech all they could handle this week. Thaddeus Lewis threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns. He may do even better this week against a suspect NC State secondary.

Next game: @ NC State (10-10)

11. Maryland 2-3 (1-0) beat Clemson 24-21

Nice come from behind victory against Clemson last week. I think that victory was more a statement of Clemson's weaknesses than Maryland's strengths. We'll see if they can build on it.

Next game: @ Wake Forest (10-10)

12. Virginia 1-3 (1-0) beat UNC 16-3

If ever a team needed a win it's the Cavaliers. Their defense played admirably against an offensively anemic Tar Heels team. Their offense did just enough to win, but no more.

Next game: vs. Indiana (10-10)
