After six weeks of action the Coastal Division continues to show that it is vastly superior to the Atlantic Division in the ACC. Honestly, I'm not sure it's going to matter who comes out on top in the Atlantic since any one of three dominant teams in the Coastal will be ready to pummel them in the ACC title game. Your surpise teams midway through the season are Wake Forest (who now sits atop the Atlantic Division) and Duke who is showing that they are not the ACC doormat anymore.

1. Virginia Tech 5-1 (3-0) beat Boston College 48-14

A swarming Tech defense held BC to 3 yards of offense in the first half. Ryan Williams ran for 159 yards and the Hokies are still the king of the hill.

Next game: @ Georgia Tech (10-17)

2. Georgia Tech 5-1 (3-1) beat Florida State 49-44

Not exactly a defensive struggle but still a quality win for the Yellow Jackets in a difficult environment. Their showdown with Virginia Tech this week may go a long way to determining the Coastal Division champ.

Next game: vs. Virginia Tech (10-17)

3. Miami 4-1 (2-1) beat Florida A&M 48-16

The Hurricanes slip one spot due to the caliber of opponent last week. They are the third piece of the puzzle in what should be an interesting finish to the Coastal Division season.

Next game: @ UCF (10-17)

4. Wake Forest 4-2 (2-1) beat Maryland 42-32

Wake is the latest king of the hill in the Atlantic Division. Riley Skinner threw for 360 yards and 4 touchdowns against a weak Maryland defense. It is a little troubling that the Deacons gave up 32 points to this Maryland team.

Next game: @ Clemson (10-17)

5. UNC 4-2 (0-2) beat Georgia Southern 42-12

This game came at a good time for the Tar Heels. It gave them a chance to re-establish some offensive momentum. Their defense is still one of the best in the conference but they desperately need a conference victory.

Next game: vs. Florida State (10-22)

6. Boston College 4-2 (2-2) lost to Virginia Tech 48-14

This team is hard to figure out. They looked completely inept against the Hokies after downing Florida State the week before. Maybe they are only competitive every other week.

Next game: vs. NC State (10-17)

7. Clemson 2-3 (1-2) was idle

The Tigers are just a couple plays per loss away from being 4-1 right now. They have to get their offense on track because their defense won't be able to hold everyone down. They have a chance this week to re-establish themselves in the Atlantic Division race.

Next game: vs. Wake Forest (10-17)

8. Duke 3-3 (1-1) beat NC State 49-28

The Blue Devils are making a believer of me after the last two weeks. They stayed right with Virginia Tech last week and enjoyed a resounding victory over NC State this week. Thaddeus Lewis threw for a gaudy 459 yards on 40 of 50 passing. This team will be a dangerous opponent down the stretch.

Next game: vs. Maryland (10-24)

9. NC State 3-3 (0-2) lost to Duke 49-28

Tom O'Brien better make major adjustments to the Wolfpack pass defense schemes after being torched the last two weeks by Riley Skinner and Thaddeus Lewis. If BC's offensive coaches have been paying attention they will come out throwing.

Next game: @ Boston College (10-17)

10. Florida State 2-4 (0-3) lost to Georgia Tech 49-44

That was an old fashioned shoot out between the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets last week. Florida State's defense is highly suspect and they are looking at the very real prospect of opening conference play at 0-4.

Next game: @ UNC (10-22)

11. Virginia 2-3 (1-0) beat Indiana 47-7

The Cavaliers offense exploded for 47 points and the defense had their second straight quality game. They have a good chance to make it three in a row this week.

Next game: @ Maryland (10-17)

12. Maryland 2-4 (1-1) lost to Wake Forest 42-32

Their offense is capable of scoring points but their defense is just too porous.

Next game: vs. Virginia (10-17)
