Gulls fall to 4-4 after conference loss to Wesley

SU had it's 1st Atlantic Central Football Conference loss this season this past Saturday as the Gulls lost to #3 Wesley College, 30-12, at Dr. Scott D. Miller Stadium. The game featured the top two ACFC teams with both entering the game with out a loss in the conference. With the victory, Wesley claims its fifth consecutive ACFC championship.

Salisbury got behind early as the Wolverines scored a TD on its 1st drive of the game. After a slow start SU's offense got its self on track after Jr slot back Warren Anderson (Vienna, Va.) scored 6 on a 4 run scamper to end a 4 play, 68 yd drive. Wesley was undaunted and responded on the following drive but Salisbury's D wasn't fazed as Sr DB Brandon Hudson (Delmar, Md.) intercepted a Shane McSweeny pass in the end zone for his 7th pick of the season.

Wesley (8-0, 3-0 ACFC) scored the next 3 TD's taking a huge lead but the Gulls responded to bring Salisbury to within 18 points late in the 3rd after Jr QB Sean Kelly (Fallston, Md.) found Sr wideout D.J. Nelson (Mullica Hill, N.J.) on a 51 yd bomb helping to set up a 6 yd TD from Sr slot back Valdase Morris (Salisbury, Md.). The tally ended up being the last with both teams picking up small gains until the final gun.

Salisbury entered the contest averaging a conference high 260 yds per game but Wesley held the Gulls to just 84. Morris and Jr slot back Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.) was the leading rusher with 44 yds and Anderson carrying the rock for a score. Soph. slot back Tyler Curley (Ellicott City, Md.) led the receivers with 3 catches for 57 yds. Kelly went 5-10 with 113 yds in the air and Sr punter Andrew Geisert (White Plains, Md.) punted 5 times for 198 yds.

SU's D was led by Soph. DB Ricky Cassidy (Edgewater, Md.), who had a career day with 10 tackles. Sr DB Antione Cuff (Landover, Md.) and reigning ACFC Rookie of the Week, Matt McMurdo (Chalfont, Pa.), getting 7 each. The 7 by McMurdo a career-high. Soph. LB Arinze Obiako (Odenton, Md.) and Sr LB Eric Ardnt (Waldwick, N.J.) with 6 tackles while Jr LB Justin Chura (Lothian, Md.) and Sr LB Tom Fontaine (Philadelphia, Pa.) had five apiece. Fontaine and Hudson had a interception each.

The Gulls goes on the road for its 2nd straight game and last road game away from Sea Gull Stadium this season when they travel to #24 Hampden-Sydney College this Saturday, Nov. 7th at 1 p ET. NOTE:

SU Sr punter Andrew Geisert (White Plains, Md.) was named ACFC (Atlantic Central Football Conference) Special Teams Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 2. This is the 2nd time he has won the honor this season, the 1st back on Sept. 14th.
