Soph. super back Randal Smedley (Frederick, Md.)rushed for a career-high 121 yds and 2 TD's in leading the Sea Gulls to a 34-19 win over Atlantic Central Football Conference's rival Frostburg State University Bobcat's in the 11th annual Regents Cup this past Saturday afternoon at in Salisbury. The game was 1st Regents Cup to not be held in neutral territory and the 1st that the Gulls beat Frostburg at Sea Gull Stadium since 1995.With the win,Salisbury clinched second-place in the ACFC (2-1).

SU(5-5, 2-1 ACFC) had 390 yds on the ground to post its second highest rushing total of the year as the Sea Gulls have now won six consecutive bouts against the Bobcats.The SU defense complemented the prevalent offensive unit as the Sea Gulls held Frostburg to a mere 224 yards of total offense.

Smedley was the start on the day as he took home the Mike McGlinchey Most Valuable Player award for Salisbury. SU was helped by the 64 yds on the ground and 2 TD's by Sr super back William Midgette (Salisbury, Md.).The Gulls had two others have big games as Sr slot Valdase Morris (Salisbury, Md.)and Jr slot Bryan Woolson (White Hall, Md.),ran for 76 and 61 yds, respectively,and Jr WR Jimmy DeBernardis (Potomac, Md.),who had a catch for 14 yds.

Frostburg (1-9, 1-2 ACFC) scored first with a FG,for a 3-0 advantage as kicker Zachary Beukers connected from short range in the Bobcat's opening drive.Salisbury answered back on it's first possession with a 10 yd TD run by Jr. QB Sean Kelly (Fallson, Md.) before Frostburg scored a TD themselves.Smedley scampered 17 yds for a TD to put the Gulls up in the final minutes of the 2nd quarter but Beukers hit for another 3 to get the FSU to a 13-12 score which was the score at halftime.

Smedley started the 3rd quarter with his 2nd TD,this time a 51 yard romp. Both teams traded possessions for the next 6 minutes,then Frostburg got closer when Mike Iheakanwa picked up a Kelly fumble returning it for a 61 yrd TD.The score put SU's lead up to 20-19.But that was as close as the Bobcats got as Midgette had 2 TD runs of 1 and 6 yds in the 4th period to get the Gulls record on the year to 5-5.

The Salisbury D had 2 players get 7 tackles in Soph. LB Matt Leon (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Sr. LB Tom Fontaine (Philadelphia, Pa.). Jr. LB Justin Chura (Lothia, Md.) 5 while Soph. LB Arinze Obiako (Odenton, Md.), Sr DT Alex Bresner (Marblehead, Mass.),freshman LB Matt McMurdo (Chalfton, Pa.),and Sr DB Antione Cuff (Landover, Md.) had 4. Fontaine, Cuff,and Sr. DB Brandon Hudson (Delmar, Md.) had an interception apiece.The pick was Hudson's 8th this season tying Byron Westbrook's (now with the Washington Redskins) single season program record. Westbrook did it in 2004.

Iheakanwa was given the Mike McGlinchey Most Valuable Player for the Bobcats for his fumble recovery score; also picking up 6 tackles as well. Travis Blair had a game high 15 tackles while Terryl Monroe had 12.FSU's offense was led by RB Anthony King,running for 87 yds on 18 carry's.

The game marked the final game at Sea Gull Stadium for 16 student athletes:Morris,Cuff,Fontaine,Hudson,Midgette,Bresner,Eric Arndt (Waldick, N.J.),Bobby Sheahin(Brookeville, Md.),D.J. Nelson(Mullica Hills, N.J.),Darryl Jones (Fruitland, Md.),Anthony Arellano(Woodbridge, Va.),Paul Cynewski (Moorestown, N.J.),Keith Polizois (Flanders, N.J.),Jeremy Harris (Forestville, Md.),Andrew Geisert (White Plains, Md.) and Jonathan Bannister(Columbia, Md.).

NOTE:

SU kicker Tommy Kowalick (Sterling, Va.) has been named the ACFC (Atlantic Central Football Conference) Special Teams Player of the Week for the 3rd time this year. The Soph. won the honor back on Sept. 8 and Oct. 26.

Kowalick's numbers in the 11th annual,34-19 Regents Cup victory over the Frostburg State University Bobcats this past Saturday aided the Sea Gulls' chances in being selected to participate in the Southwest Bowl for the second straight season.

Kowalick kicked off 5 times for a total of 259 yards against averaging 59 yards per kick. He was 4 for 4 in PAT's.On the year, Kowalick has kicked off 45 times for a total of nearly 2,700 yards, averaging 60 yds per kickoff.

The Gulls was selected Monday to participate in the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Southwest Bowl Championship game. SU,the defending Southwest Bowl Champions,travel to Annville,Pa.,this Saturday, Nov. 21 to play the Lebanon Valley College Dutchman.The game will be at Arnold Field with a Noon start.

Salisbury (5-5) 5-0 at Sea Gull Stadium, ended the regular-season with a 34-19 win over in-state rival the Frostburg State University Bobcats this past Saturday in Salisbury to win their 6th straight Regents Cup.

This is SU's 5th appearance in an ECAC Bowl and has won the past 3, including last year's 21-17 win over Moravian College in the 2008 ECAC Bowl Championship.

This will be the 1st ever meeting between the two.The teams didn't have a common opponent this year.Lebanon Valley (8-2),from the Middle Atlantic Conference,and had a record breaking campaign as it won 8 games for the 1st time since 1902.This is the first ever ECAC Bowl Championship appearance for the Dutchmen.

The Gulls are 1 of 12 teams selected to a 2009 ECAC Bowl Championship game.
