Loss To Georgia Nothing Compared to What Awaits Auburn

For many, the day after Thanksgiving is a relaxing day, spent enjoying time with family, catching up on “to do” lists or simply lying on the couch watching football. For the Auburn Tigers, it’ll be anything but as they try to recover from their loss to the Georgia Bulldogs last Saturday.

Scores on Auburn’s first two possessions gave notice the Tigers were in it to win it. Tiger QB Chris Todd led his team on drives of seventy four and eighty two yards respectively, taking a commanding fourteen point lead to the end of the first quarter. But just 1:46 into the second, Georgia responded with a fifty yard touchdown strike from QB Joe Cox to sophomore wide out Israel Troupe. The Tigers never really recovered, scoring only ten more points in the remaining forty three minutes of play, and dropped the game 31-24.

In fact, Auburn’s only real glimmer of hope came in the fourth quarter as Tiger great Demond Washington fielded a kick off and returned it ninety nine yards for the score to knot it at twenty four.

Todd would toss a pick on Auburn’s next drive, which would be returned to their thirty nine yard line, followed four plays later by a twenty four yard touchdown scamper from Georgia’s Caleb King. And, with that, it was over.

While there were moments in this one it seemed Auburn would take the win in decisive fashion, there were also points where it seemed obvious were they to face a more formidable opponent that the Tigers wouldn’t stand a chance.

The latter will come to life next Friday when the second ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and Heisman hopeful RB Mark Ingram come to town. The Tide’s fortunes on Saturday were far more impressive than the Tigers, as they shellacked Chattanooga 45-0 on their way to a perfect 11-0 record.

Now all that stands in undefeated Alabama’s way is an unranked Auburn team that very few will give a chance to win this one. However, the ‘Any Given Sunday’ rule really applies to any day other than Tuesday, so it’s not inconceivable that Auburn could shock the world and snatch a win from the Crimson Tide. Unfortunately for Tiger fans, it’s highly unlikely.

The best Auburn can really hope for is not to be embarrassed. A close game will build momentum for next year, which is what they’re playing for at this point. Auburn’s season is over now, and the only thing left to do is drive a Crimson nail in the coffin.
