Finally the BCS Championship game is upon us Thursday night. The point spread is Alabama -4 vs. Texas. Should be a good game between two great teams so let’s take a closer look and figure out the best bet for our free pick.

According to the Sagarin rankings, Alabama ended the year with the nation's 12th-toughest schedule. Texas was 49th. If not for that final second being put back on the clock, Texas doesn’t have a chance to kick a field goal to squeak out a narrow in over good-but-not great Nebraska. The week before that, the Longhorns were locked in a 3-point game in the middle of the 4th quarter with Texas A&M (and gave up 39 to the Aggies).

At the same time, Alabama crushed a very good Florida in the SEC title game following a clutch win over Auburn on the road.
It seems that quite often in these title games the long layoff has teams looking sloppy and rusty in the first half. That favors the defenses. Alabama can weather that storm by running on offense while Texas depends on the pass game which is more easily affected by the long layoff.

All signs are pointing to an Alabama victory and I don’t think they’ll have much problem covering the 4-pt spread. Roll with the Tide and give the points.
